Tony Robbins – Definitely NOT My Guru

I came to Vegas this week to attend Tony Robbins’ Business Mastery immersion. My intended outcome for the week was to leave Business Mastery with clarity on how to pivot my 19 year old strategy company to ensure total relevance for my clients now and into the projectable future. The outcome was very different. I think its Tony Robbins who needs some clarity on how to be relevant, plus kind and empathetic when it comes to women and the #MeToo Movement.

During the first four hours of Business Mastery we heard stories of wealth and luxury about Tony and his male cronies (all white); stories, by the way, that you can get online or from listening to his outdated CDs from the 90s. Not much new here, relevant or worth the $10,000 price of admission. Certainly nothing about how to master business in the always changing, super complex business environment we experience today. The most egregious however, was the hour he spent lauding Steve Wynn as an icon of business leadership. The man is a predator of women and should be in prison. He is certainly not an icon of business leadership in 2018. Tony dismissed Steve Wynn’s stepping down as Chairman of his gambling empire, as a result of having “personal problems”. His behavior was far more than a “personal problem”; he repeated criminal acts against women time and time again in his business. Oppressing and abusing women is NOT the hallmark of a great leader.

The fact that Tony idolizes Steve Wynn in tandem with his previous, highly publicized comments about the #MeToo movement as women using it to “get significance and certainty by attacking and destroying someone else” caused me to pack up and leave. There is nothing I can learn from this woefully out of touch dinosaur of masculinity.
